This well shaped snuff bottle is rendered from a solid piece of translucent amethyst. The figure of Liu Hai tempting the three legged toad is masterfully rendered in low relief on the body of the bottle. Liu Hai temps the toad with a coin, and upon catching the toad is carried to the Moon. The subject of Liu Hai serves as the symbol of businessmen in Chinese culture. The entire interior of the bottle has been removed from a relatively small hole. The foot of the bottle is slightly indented which is consistent with the period.
In our opinion, the subject matter, material and workmanship are consistent with a date of 1800-1850 for this handsome snuff bottle.
