Spinach Green Jade Altar Vase

Qing Dynasty (清朝), Eighteenth Century

Spinach Green Nephrite Jade

Height: 4 inches

The present miniature jade vase is crafted from spinach green nephrite jade with some black flecking. The body of the vase is a tall oval that tapers towards the neck and bulges in the center. It rests on a footed rim with a lightly hollowed base. A stylized ruyi pattern surrounds the bottom and neck registers of this vase, with the center register in a lobed pattern which was especially popular during the eighteenth century.

This spinach green jade vase would have been part of an altar set along with a censor and covered box. It most likely was made to hold sticks of incense and is bottom weighted for good balance. In our opinion, the subject matter, material and workmanship indicate an eighteenth century date for this work of art.
